Credit Cards

We have not attempted to rank these services in any way as the needs of every graduate are different. For many of you overdraft and loan facilities are the most important features, for others it may preferential mortgage rates or discounts on goods and services.

As usual, remember to check the latest details with the institution concerned as they may change at short notice. In addition, if you are likely to exceed your overdraft limit check to see what rate of interest you will be charged on the portion over the interest-free amount.

Another point to note, if you read the literature or visit the web sites note that many banks dress up standard features such as online banking and free banking as part of their graduate package when they are actually available to everyone. As you will readily see, most banks offer very similar deals and very often the main distinguishing feature is the level of service. Basically, if you are not happy with the service in your bank tell them or transfer your account. Most banks seem to offer their graduate service to new customers on proof of graduation and identification.

As far as how to deal with your bank is concerned the most important point is to talk to them if you are in trouble. Do not under any circumstances ignore their letters, quite naturally if this happens they tend to assume the worst. It is in the banks interest as much as yours to help you out of any difficulties. Whatever you do never play the 'I'm a graduate and going to earn a lot of money' card when dealing with bank staff, generally speaking its counter productive and they've heard it a million times before.
